Waja Guma
“Little children learning together”
Aboriginal Early Learning Centre
Who are we?
Waja Guma is a culturally connected early childhood learning centre run by the Baynton West Primary School. Commencing in October 2022, Waja Guma is a collaboration between local industry and Baynton West Primary School. Waja Guma was developed to create a culturally safe and playful space for Aboriginal children and their parents from birth to four years of age following the 3A approach.
Our Partnerships
Waja Guma Aboriginal Early Learning Program is a joint initiative between Rio Tinto and Baynton West Primary School. The three-year pilot program was developed in consultation with local Aboriginal families, after the community expressed a need for a culturally connected, early childhood learning centre. With a focus on creating a space that is culturally inclusive and evidence based to help prepare Aboriginal children for success at school, we embrace families as their children’s first and best educators.
Our Space
Waja Guma is located on the grounds of Baynton West Primary School. Nestled in our Early Childhood Education Block, there is access to a culturally inspired playground, a vegetable garden and shady areas to engage in fun learning.
Our Program
Support Supporting families to engage in meaningful interactions with their children to improve developmental outcomes before beginning school. Community Building relationships with community, linking families with support services and agencies. Social Bringing families together to play, relax and share some morning tea in a safe and friendly space.
